Blog Post 2: Topic Question
What factors contribute to the increase in hate crimes against the Asian community and how can we solve these issues?
I chose this question because of today's pandemic and the many downsides to it. Reflecting on how much it affected the world, I wanted to choose a topic that was very current and serious and in addition, something that was close to home. That topic is the discrimination and attacks of Asians around the world. I think it's important to research this for the Asian community for a multitude of reasons. Primarily, it's to protect the people and prevent any senseless violence. This year alone, they're have been countless of cases of Asians attacked or persecuted for their appearance. Racism is very prevalent still as seen by the events that occurred in 2020. From kids being bullied to old men assaulted on the streets, I believe it's an obligation to do something as a member of this community.
In order to solve an issue, the first step is to analyze and identify what is causing this said issue. I believe if we're able to figure out the factors that contribute to this, we can formulate a more specific and customized approach to the second part of the question. I think that the main reason of the increase of hate crimes towards Asians is society's ignorance. As people, we often throw blame something on a person/group to have something to be angry at. Then, that blame generalizes to a massive demography that had nothing to do with that issue. In this case, the origin of Covid-19 was in Wuhan, China. Society associates China with every Asian and that causes the hate towards this particular ethnicity. If we were able to enlighten the population about the pandemic and the flaws of their unjustified hatred, I believe it would be a step forward into preventing more violence.
To support a working answer, I think a mix of primary and secondary sources will be necessary. This is because data would be required to formulate an answer to the cause of the increase in hate crimes. Therefore, the data will be from a primary source. In addition, secondary sources will be required so that I can see what multiple data sets agree and disagree on. Secondary sources will give me a summary of what the data says and that data probably originates from a primary source.
